My reasons for leaving Ireland

I left Ireland in 1846 because of the Potato Famine, I was slowly losing money at my bar and it was hard to eat. So i sold my bar for half the price it was worth becasue thats all i could get and i used that money to get to America.

My image of America before leaving Ireland

From what I was told and read about America sounded like it was a wonderful place. I had so many opportunities for sucess and to become rich. Everyone that I talk to said it was the Dream life.

My voyage to America

I had hear that the voyage to America could be quite horrible unless you find one of the more expensive ships. I had heard that you can get very sick and then you would not be let into America, so i did not want to risk it. I used every dime I had to ensure that I would make it in. The voyage was very long, however it was comfortable and had good service and plenty of food. Thier was a lot of rich people who looked down on me because i was not rich, but all in all t was well.

My arrival in America

When I arrived in America at the Boston Harbor it was very crowded, thier were men telling me they didnt want me thier and yelling and offering me all sorts of deals and jobs. I thought it would be best to wait and try and figure things out on my own. The country was very beautiful however not what I exspected. I exspected the streets to be paved with gold and people to be handing out money becasue they were so rich but there seemed to be alot of poor pople. My first impression did not live up to all the hype i heard back home.

My neighborhood and home

When I got in to the Boston Harbor there was also a boy told that if I wanted a job i would have to talk to Micheal O' Donnell. This young boy showed me to him and right away he gave me a job. I had to deliver meat to a bunch of people around the city. It took me all day trying to find my way around the city. When I got back Mr. O'Donnell gave me some food and a place to stay on the third floor of his butcher shop on a busy street in boston.

My job

My plan was to try and open a new bar when i got here but I had to make some money First. I had kept running arrands and helping Mr. O' Donnell with things he had to do.I soon started to find another job to bring in more money. I then got a job as a steelworker, it was starting to become and big industy.

The Problems and hardships I've faced in America

I really wanted to open up my bar but I wasn't making enogh money even working for the man who controlled most of this city. I tried to eat a little as poosible so that i could keep saving up. The place i was staying was really small and dirty but if was free and I couldnt afford to buy a new place becasue i needed to save. The main ploblem i ran into was that no one beside the Irish liked the Irish. Everyone hated us in America
